“Oh it has a money back guarantee” I hear you say. Yes in the short term these gimmicks will work, you will definately shed some weight, but that is exactly what it is weight, not FAT! If a program claims rapid weight loss in the first week to month then you can guarantee that you will not only be losing fat. There will be fluid and worse still muscle mass lost.

Our metabolism, or the fire that burns all the energy we consume, is driven by muscle. So the more muscle you have, the more energy you burn just existing. Now if you lose some of that muscle it is not all that easy to get back. So you have lost weight, but some of it was muscle, so what?? You have effectively slowed your own metabolism down. You are now burning less energy than before , but you weigh less. So when the program comes to an end and you have acheived your goal weight and you don’t want to buy any more shakes or bars, you go back to eating kind of normal. But the kilos start to come back on quicker than when they went. Why?

Well you now have less mascle mass than before you started an extreme weight loss regime, so now you require less energy to get you through your day. The trouble is you still think you can eat what you did before, you can’t! How do I know this? For a start there is ample research out there pointing at it being just plain wrong to lose weight this way. But the biggest thing I can tell you is that I have tried it. Yep when I was about 25 to 30 kgs heavier I tried all sorts of things and two shakes a day was one of them. It was horrible!

I was constantly hungry, I was windy and bloated to start with and all I wanted to do was chew on something! Drinking all of your meals gets old very quickly. And when I started to eat whole foods again the weight came back on, slowly at first, then in a hurry. The 9 kgs I had lost were back faster than I had lost them. Yes I lost 3 kilos the first week, but from week 2 it slowed down. And it got harder and harder.

What I am saying is don’t make the same mistakes I did. Losing all the weight I lost was why I bacame a PT, so that I could help others not make the same mistakes I did on the way to a healthier happier life.

So when you see and ad on TV or hear “lose m6kgs this week!” know that it is far too good to be true. You need to make small progressions week on week for sustainable prolonged fat loss that will last you a lifetime.
